Text Complexity Resources

Standard 10 of the Common Core State Standards focuses on increasing students capacity with complex text across the school years to ensure that they will be able to read the kinds of necessary texts they will encounter in higher education and in their careers. Below are several links from TextProject to assist LEAS and charter schools as they begin addressing text complexity in schools.

Text Complexity Rubric Question Answered by Kansas

Following our last Process Support Day for ELA, Julie contacted the Kansas DOE with our question regarding the levels of the rubric to determine the qualitative measure of text complexity. This is the information (verbatim) that she received.

The Text Complexity rubrics are not a grade level measure. The rubric helps to determine the difficulty of the text for each area; levels of meaning/purpose, structure, language conventionality and clarity, and knowledge demands. The rubrics help to determine the qualitative piece of the Text Complexity triangle.

You must also look at quantitative measures. And perhaps most importantly for placing a text at the appropriate grade level, the Reader and Task. These three pieces of the Text Complexity triangle guide educators in choosing appropriate text for each student regardless of grade level.

For examples, please see examples of analysis for specific texts on the KSDE website at http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4605

Below is the link to alignment of the assessment measures in Reading 3D as they apply to Common Core State Standards.

http://www.wirelessgeneration.com/pdf/standards-alignments/mCLASS_Reading_3D_Standards_Alignment.pdf

Below is a statement from Carolyn Guthrie is our Reading 3D contact:

“One thing to keep in mind is that these assessments measures are NOT full standards coverage. The DIBELS measures are indicators as any universal screener would be and the TRC portion gives the teacher the ability to diagnose error patterns, cueing systems and comprehension issues. TRC is the application side of 3D where students use strategies from DIBELS (skill specific) to apply in reading authentic texts. I am also attaching a continuum of skill development. Teachers use the indicators from DIBELS and the information/diagnosis from TRC to determine what skills are missing in the foundational development. The continuum has skills listed from the standards, but not all of these skills are assessed, because the program is not full standards coverage. We want teachers to use this program as formative and maybe some people in the field are wanting a system that would assess all standards”.
